UNIRI | The University of Rijeka

Founded in 1973, the University of Rijeka has matured into a modern European university and center of excellence whose impact extends beyond the region. With a total of 11 faculties and 4 departments, we are a research, science, and education-oriented university that supports social and economic development in our community, the City of Rijeka, and the wider region.

An Innovative University Devoted to Lifelong Learning

On top of our efforts to provide new generations with quality education and a reliable hub of academic activity, the University of Rijeka has developed a lifelong learning system for distributing ideas and innovations, all with the aim of supporting broader social progress and making northwestern Croatia more competitive. By building a state-of-the-art Campus, the University of Rijeka has visibly improved its teaching methods and scientific structure, while attending to each student’s and staff member’s living and working needs.

An Open, Future-Oriented University

The University of Rijeka is a socially responsible and open university – not only are we open to international students, teaching staff, and researchers, but also to recent developments in higher education. As our vision places the University of Rijeka within the 500 top rated European universities, we have chosen the path of dynamic growth. Having embraced an organized and systematic approach to mobility, our University supports scientific and artistic careers alike, enabling each individual to express their talents and entrepreneurial potential.

An Engaged University Tailored to Student Needs

We have created an educational system and learning framework that puts students first. With this goal in mind, our University continuously updates its teaching methods, fosters social awareness, and attends to the needs of everyone within its academic community. Our primary value lies in connecting students, professors, and other staff members. Only such a university can be innovative, creative, and excellent while remaining a place of solidarity and security.

Mission and Vision

Our Mission
The University of Rijeka has built its mission upon the tasks defined by the Act on Scientific Activity and Higher Education. The University conducts scientific, artistic, and developmental research, with particular emphasis on programs of strategic interest for the Republic of Croatia, on artistic production, and on specialized skills, as well as on relevant undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs. In accomplishing our tasks, we are especially devoted to the sustainable development of our community. The University unified its constituencies – with particular emphasis on faculties, academies, and scientific departments – into a coherent whole, and assures their integration. We make strategic and developmental decisions about academic concerns and scientific research, oversee financial conduct and legal questions, manage investments and developmental plans and, finally, promote cooperation with external partners in scientific activities and higher education.

The University ensures internal and international mobility programs for its student body and its teaching staff alike, rationally uses human and material resources and develops multi-disciplinary studies. We continuously attend to the quality and international relevance of our teaching, scientific, artistic, and professional work. The University is developing a unified info system and a library database.

Our Vision

The University of Rijeka will be a research-oriented university whose scientific profile will attest to its commitment to sustainable development. It will conduct excellent and efficient education based on clearly defined outcomes and the ideal of lifelong learning. By actively collaborating with the economy, engaging in partnerships with the local community, joining European higher education networks, and maintaining the highest possible standard of orderliness and responsibility, the University of Rijeka will prove its public engagement and contribute to the global journey toward a knowledge society. The University of Rijeka will be a dynamic university supportive of mobility and individual academic careers, one that enables each member of its community (teachers, assistants, administrators, and students alike) to express their talents and entrepreneurial potential.

Charter and Code

By signing the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers, The University of Rijeka became the first Croatian university to follow the footsteps of the European Commission, which had passed these documents in 2005. Just like our predecessors in the Commission, we strive to improve employment prospects and promote careers in research, all with the aim of fostering a growth economy, furthering employment, and establishing a European research network.

What is more, we are the first national institution to sign the European Commission’s Declaration of Participation in the Human Resources Strategy Committee. By signing these charters, we have pledged to implement them at the University of Rijeka, which was one of our strategic goals as defined in the University of Rijeka Strategy 2007 – 2013: “A Research-oriented university systematically attends to careers in research at any stage: from young researchers, through independent researchers, to experienced researchers. The University of Rijeka will extend its legislation, practice, and organizational and financial instruments, to encompass the principles stated by The European Charter for Researchers and The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers.” (pg. 51)

The University of Rijeka partakes in the pilot project of putting the Charter and Code into practice, all with the aim of crafting a report about previous research, conducting an internal analysis, and building an action plan. We have adopted the Human Resources in Research Strategy at a Senate meeting in October 2009, and our research report, internal analysis, and action plan were approved at a meeting in June 2010.
