The ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Rijeka, Trieste International Foundation (Fondazione Internazionale Trieste per il Progresso e la Libertà delle Scienze) and The Agency Rijeka 2020 LLC was held on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at the Student Center’s Café “Akvarij” at the University of Rijeka Campus.
The Agreement will contribute to strengthening social, cultural and economic relations as well as strategic cooperation between Trieste and Rijeka, wider community and science, especially considering the forthcoming year 2020, during which Trieste will be the European City of Science and Rijeka the European Capital of Culture.
Welcome speeches and brief addresses were held by Madam Rector Prof. Snježana Prijić-Samaržija, Ph.D., Prof. Maurizio Fermeglia, Ph.D., Rector of the University of Trieste, Mr. Ivan Šarar, Head of the Department of Culture, City of Rijeka, Mr. Paolo Polidori, Ph.D., Deputy Mayor of Trieste, and H.E. Mr. Adriano Chiodi Cianfarani, Ambassador of the Italian Republic to the Republic of Croatia.
Short presentations were held by Ms. Emina Višnić, Chief Executive Officer, Rijeka 2020 LLC, Prof. Stefano Fantoni, Ph.D., President of the Trieste International Foundation, and Prof. Alen Ružić, M.D., Ph.D., UNIRI Vice-Rector for Science and Arts.
Ms. Irena Kregar Šegota, Development and Strategic Partnerships Director at Rijeka 2020 LLC, presented the promo video for Rijeka: European Capital of Culture 2020, directed by famous Croatian director Mr. Dalibor Matanić.
Professor Stefano Fantoni, Ph.D., presented the main ideas and benefits of EuroScience Open Forum 2020: connecting science and society, promoting sustainability, creating smart cities, and care for the environment and our planet. He also announced the science festival taking place in Trieste from June 27 to July 11, 2020, during which a five-day conference EuroScience Open Forum (July 5-9) for scientists, entrepreneurs and media will take place.
Professor Prof. Alen Ružić, M.D., Ph.D., briefly presented the project “27 Neighborhoods – Campus Neighborhood”.
